Over the past few months, we've been
working hard with our local, regional, state and federal partners to
ensure Sacramento gets its fair share of federal funds from the
president's stimulus package. There is growing anticipation as
the plan could result in thousands of new jobs at infrastructure
projects that are "shovel ready" in the Sacramento region, including
The Railyards development which is the largest urban infill project in
the nation.
Washington D.C. Visit
Thomas Enterprises traveled to Washington
D.C. for the Inauguration of President Obama and to communicate the
importance of the need for infrastructure spending in the Sacramento
region. Suheil Totah, VP for Thomas Enterprises met with
Sacramento
Congresswoman Doris Matsui and had the opportunity to speak with House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and California Senator Barbara Boxer. Totah
also
spoke with newly appointed Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood (at
left) to discuss investment in roads, bridges, transit and rail lines.
Federal stimulus funds earmarked for Sacramento will create thousands
of jobs this year. Over time, development at The Railyards will create
75,000 jobs and generate a $33 billion dollar economic impact for the
region.
New Streets Coming Soon!
Hundreds of architects, engineers, planners
and consultants are working behind the scenes to create the foundation
elements of the new downtown Railyards development. Following the
resolution of the state budget it's anticipated that state bond funds
will soon be available creating even more jobs at the site.
Specifically, design work is well underway for the extension of 5th and
6th Streets as well as Railyards Boulevard, a new road that will sit in
the heart of the development and run east to west. Construction
is
expected to begin within the next few months. For regular updates and
information on the progress of infrastructure work, visit our Website

Infrastructure Update
As
many as 3,000 new jobs are expected to
be created in 2009 as a result of The Railyards redevelopment.
Plans are underway to relocate the Union Pacific rail tracks 500
feet to the north, construct two new overpasses over the
relocated tracks on 5th and 6th Streets, create Railyards
Boulevard, and begin remediation and abatement work on the
historic shop buildings. Stay tuned for an announcement regarding
groundbreaking at the site in early 2009.
Intermodal Update
An environmental review of the Sacramento
Intermodal Transportation Facility (SITF) is underway in compliance
with the National Environmental Policy Act. The Intermodal
Facility is an integral part of the development of The Railyards and
will provide a single location for bicycle, pedestrian, light rail,
bus, taxi and train connections. The first phase of the
Intermodal
Facility is the track relocation and construction is set to get
underway this fall. For more information and related materials visit
the Intermodal project Website at www.cityofSacramento.org/transportation/director/sitf.
The Railyards Goes International
Recently,
a crew from NOS, the Dutch Public Broadcasting Network visited The
Railyards to highlight the project as a national example of how federal
stimulus funds could be utilized for the immediate creation of
thousands of local jobs. The NOS network boasts two million
viewers in
The Netherlands and has a correspondent based in Washington, D.C.
In The Community
Thomas Enterprises recently hosted a
fundraiser for the non-profit
group Advocacy Without Borders. The organization works to connect
people with disabilities, mental health needs, seniors, families,
workers, and low income families to programs that provide disability
rights, senior rights, civil rights and unified action. The
gathering featured Assemblymember Mariko Yamada and Advocacy Without
Borders Director Marty Omoto, a tireless advocate for the disabled
community and a regular face at the State Capitol. Our thanks to
the many Railyards friends and partners who attended in support of the
cause.
