Friends of The
Railyards,
June 2008
The month of June is
shaping up to be an important time, with an announcement regarding
the recipients of Proposition 1C state bond funding set for the
latter part of the month. Our list of coalition supporters continues to
grow, soil clean-up is ahead of schedule and design and
planning work is progressing.
Track Relocation
Project Well Underway
On May 21, Thomas
Enterprises hosted an inaugural field review meeting marking an
important milestone in the track relocation project. Attendees
included staff and project managers from the City of Sacramento,
numerous project engineers, planners, consultants and key staff
members from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Office of
Historic Preservation (OHP), and Caltrans. A geotechnical field
investigation is already completed and a conceptual design
was submitted to UP on April 30. The track relocation team
continues to work hard to meet ambitious milestones in order to
open up the site to the public.

Planning Award
The Railyards recently
received an award from the Sacramento Valley American Planning
Association acknowledging the work that went into producing the
Railyards Specific Plan. The association recognized
the work of elected officials, the planning staff at the City of
Sacramento and Thomas Enterprises in creating the Specific
Plan, which is the overarching policy document that will guide
development in the Railyards for the next 20 years.
The Specific Plan ensures the Railyards' redevelopment will result in a
transit-oriented, 24-hour mixed-use district expanding the Central
Business District; creating a new residential downtown neighborhood and
a key tourist destination. The Specific Plan also provides a
framework for resources conservation, an affordable housing component
and preservation of Sacramento's rich history and culture.
The award nomination now goes to the
state for consideration by the California American Planning
Association.

Recent Council Action
Sacramento City Council recently
approved a new redevelopment area encompassing the Railyards
development. This action helps facilitate further redevelopment
opportunities within the 244-acre site. The designation will
remain in place for the next 30 years.

Second
Saturday Design Competition
Be sure to visit the Sacramento Green
Living Center at 1931 H Street on June 14th during Second Saturday
where an exhibition featuring the work of 8 design teams will be on
display. The U.S. Green Building Council sponsored the design
competition and entrants will be judged on designing a mixed-use block
in The Railyards redevelopment.
The goal of the exhibitition is to increase awareness of alternative
building design and methods of creating healthy, livable communities
for the Sacramento region.
Competition participants will be available to discuss how their
projects integrate design, sustainability, innovation and social
consciousness which are components of the the LEED Green Building
Rating System. |
Proposition 1C Awards To Be Announced Later
this Month!
Last month, Thomas Enterprises submitted
a proposal to the California Department of Housing and Community
Development for funding to develop a world-class neighborhood at the
Railyards. The grants follow voter passage of Proposition 1C in 2006.
If approved, the funds will be used to build infrastructure to support
infill housing at The Railyards and encourage the development of
affordable and high-density housing close to public transportation.
HCD will publicize its final list of recommended projects in mid-June
and the agency's Loan and Grants Committee will hold public hearings in
Los Angeles on June 19 and 20 to review the finalists. Final
awards will be announced in late June.
