Infrastructure Projects at The Railyards
The colored
map outlines work currently underway.
See key below |
Pink - 1-5 Richard Interchange Improvements.
Plans are in the works for interchange upgrades to Richards Boulevard at I-5,
and the section of Jiboom Street and Bercut between Richards and Railyards
Boulevard to improve traffic flow, add pedestrian walkways and new bike
lanes. Bercut will be extended south to connect to Railyards Boulevard. David
Evans and Associates, under contract with the City of Sacramento, is heading
the design team.
Green - Railyards Boulevard and 5th Street. Money from Proposition 1C
is funding the
construction of Railyards Boulevard, the main thoroughfare through
the project, as well as 5th Street. Railyards Boulevard will extend from Bercut on the west to
7th Street on the east. 5th Street begins at H and heads
to the North. The work includes
building a new overpass to extend over the relocated UP rail line.
Brown - 5th Street Garage and Steps.
Presently in the design state, the project will be constructed
by the City of Sacramento. It's located south of Stevens between
5th and 6th.
Purple – Sixth Street extension to Railyards Boulevard. Waiting for potential funding from
Proposition
1B funds following application by City of Sacramento.
Light Blue – Union Pacific track relocation. Agencies
working on moving the tracks
500 feet to the north include Thomas Enterprises, UP, the
City of Sacramento,
the Federal Highway Administration, the Office of Historic
Preservation, Caltrans
and numerous project engineers, planners and key staff members.
Construction is expected to be completed by 2010.

Track Relocation Gets Boost From Matsui
Under the leadership of Sacramento Congresswoman Doris
Matsui (at left with Suheil Totah, V.P.Thomas Enterprises)
the proposed relocation of the Union Pacific rail line is moving
forward on schedule as outlined above. Matsui has been
instrumental in coordinating the effort with federal
agencies and the California Department of Transportation
(CalTrans). As a result, federal environmental review of the project
is expected by February. The track relocation will result in
enhanced rail operations and reliability of passenger and freight
rail service.
State Funds Sought Under Grade Separation
Program
The California Transportation Commission (CTC) is holding hearings
today (8/27) and
Thursday in Sacramento to consider a request from the
City of Sacramento for funds to improve safety, minimize accidents and
reduce traffic congestion in The Railyards
development. The City is requesting $18 million in funds from
Proposition 1B to help with the proposed extension of 6th Street north to
Railyards Boulevard as well as funds for the 7th Street pedestrian
tunnel. The CTC staff is recommending the commission fund the
program. Sacramento's bi-partisan legislative delegation, Congresswoman
Doris Matsui, SACOG, the Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Capitol
Corridor Joint Powers Authority sent letters of support on behalf of the request. We
are continuing to seek other state funds that are critical to the project
including funds for the 2nd Street tunnel, other roadways and storm water
systems. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

RailVolution 2008
The theme, "Building Livable Communities with Transit"
is the subject of this year's National RailVolution Conference in San Francisco beginning October 26. RailVolution was formed a decade ago by public transit agencies and developers in Portland, Oregon who saw the interwoven connection between public transit investments in urban settings. National attendees at the three-day event will have an opportunity to take a ride on Amtrak's Capitol Corridor to visit The Railyards site for a private tour combined with a visit to the California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento.
