Friends of The Railyards,

   December 2008

In the final months of 2008, additional money from voter-approved Proposition 1C was awarded to the development for brownfield clean-up and a new video about The Railyards has been posted on YouTube. As 2009 approaches, there is much anticipation surrounding the creation of thousands of new jobs to build infrastructure at the 240-acre downtown Sacramento development.

YouTube Debut

Ashort video highlighting The Railyards development project is now available on YouTube. The six-minute presentation, created as a tribute to our local, state and federal partners, chronicles the recent history of the project including City Council highlights, news clips and the visit of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and other members of his administration. Check out the Railyard Team Highlight Video at http://www.youtube.com/Railyards2008 and look for regular video updates in the months ahead.

Brownfield Award

The California Pollution Control Financing Authority in November approved a $15 million grant from Proposition IC for clean-up at the former Union Pacific Railroad site. The money was part of $53.8 million in grants and loans awarded to redevelopment projects in Sacramento and 10 other counties in the state. While $5 million has been awarded, the balance requires additional state action as part of a pending economic stimulus plan which remains under discussion.

Infrastructure Update

As many as 3,000 new jobs are expected to be created in 2009 as a result of The Railyards redevelopment.  Plans are underway to relocate the Union Pacific rail tracks 500 feet to the north, construct two new overpasses over the relocated tracks on 5th and 6th Streets, create Railyards Boulevard, and begin remediation and abatement work on the historic shop buildings.  Stay tuned for an announcement regarding groundbreaking at the site in early 2009.

Thanks for a Great Year!

A special thank you to our supporters and friends who helped us celebrate some important milestones in 2008 including awards of significant state bond funding for infrastructure, a visit and personal project endorsement from Governor Schwarzenegger and the near completion of soil clean-up at the site. We look forward to continued community involvement and providing jobs and economic benefits to the City and Sacramento region in the coming years.
